Although the workshop took place some time ago- I still believe it’s worth to mention it in public.
Participants from 12 different countries, out of which the most numerous group was polish(!), gathered in Sint-Lucas School of Architecture in beautiful belgian city Gent to face design methodologies based on the concept of Object-Oriented Design (OOD).
The workshop started with a few lectures on the matter, as well as tutorials on processing coding language.
Rather sooner than later-acquired knowledge became a computational tool for all students’ groups. We started experiments with bunch of objects- agents and their behaviours with a focus on their mutual interaction. This interplay, intensive as definition, would give rise to a new homogenous object, instead of assemblage of smaller, not related to one another parts.
Parallel to building geometries through programming, we also focused on the physical models. The array of materials was indeed diverse: sunflower seeds, wooden sticks (300 m long in total), spaghetti pasta, flour, colour threads, plastic cables, feather laces and tensile materials. In terms of treatment methods we used 3d scanning, glueing, plastic deformation with heat gun, spraying, burning and other additive or substractive methods of handmade fabrication. Those intensive, one week lasting experiments in Gent, made most of us sure of how powerful object oriented design can be. Finaly geometry, as a result of bottom-up process of formation rather that predefined representation was always surprising – very often spectacular and sometimes only promising to be better
